The Start

of the Center of Business Innovation

The Orange County Center of Business Innovation began as a task force initiated by the Orange County Citizens Foundation in mid-2014. The Citizens Foundation recognized that many of the top issues affecting Orange County’s quality of life stemmed from its economy. The Citizens Foundation envisioned that a unified, forward-thinking, and strategic business community could improve economic conditions in Orange County. The organization called together representatives of the Orange County Partnership (Orange County’s Office of Economic Development) and the Orange County Chamber of Commerce, as well as thought leaders in the business community to consider the possibilities.

Original task force members included:

  • Jim Smith, Advance Testing Company, Co-Chair
  • Tom Weddell, Vanacore DeBenedictus DiGovanni & Weddell, Co-Chair
  • Dennis Barnett, Propinquity Associates
  • Maureen Halahan, Orange County Partnership
  • Michelle Koury, Crystal Run Healthcare
  • Alan Marks, Stanley Marks & Company
  • Ralph Martucci, Orange County Chamber of Commerce
  • Nancy Proyect, Orange County Citizens Foundation

Over a five-week period, the task force developed an exciting new model – the Orange County Center of Business Innovation – a triumvirate focused on advocacy, economic development, and better integration of the business community. The task force has now evolved into a strategic and agile organization, focused only on improving the business climate in Orange County.

Current Members include:

  • Jim Smith, Advance Testing Company, President
  • Tom Weddell, Vanacore DeBenedictus DiGovanni & Weddell, Treasurer
  • Dennis Barnett, Propinquity Associates, Secretary
  • Maureen Halahan, Orange County Partnership
  • Alan Marks, Stanley Marks & Company
  • Nancy Proyect, Orange County Citizens Foundation
  • Brian Varley, Riemann, Scalio and Varley

The Center of Business Innovation is being formed as a 501(c)3 and the Council of Business Innovation, its partner, will be a 501(c)6 organization. This design will allow the Council to have a lobbying arm, focused solely on advocating on all levels of government for Orange County business while the Center of Business Innovation will focus on improving business integration and more expansive economic development.
